RASHES
The term rash is a general term used mostly for red (inflammatory) conditions of the skin. There are hundreds of rashes that can affect our skin through our lifetime. Rashes often result from a stimulation of immune cell activity in the skin. This can result from reaction to an infection--such as those caused by fungi ("ring worm", "jock itch", "athlete's foot"), bacteria (impetigo), yeast, and parasites (scabies, bed bugs), reaction to a medication or an infection or condition elsewhere in the body, reaction to the sun or chemicals outside the body, or autoimmune conditions where the immune system is triggered to attack otherwise normal tissue. The types of rash, their causes, and their treatments are highly variable meaning that dermatology professionals are best suited to properly diagnose and manage these diseases.
